California Dreaming About Country Outfitter Boots

I have always imagined that I would have been a rockin' gunslinger in the style of Annie Oakley. Granted, those years of California history play in my heart. The romance of the gold rush run through my veins and the years reading about Laura Ingalls. Prairie, cowgirl, and rugged westerner are really where my heart sings.

I never owned cowgirl boots as a kid, it was the 70's and rainbow colors were more the thing. I did rock a prairie dress, but no boots.

All that has changed because of the wonderful folks at Country Outfitter. They were the primary sponsor of the Arkansas Women Bloggers conference that I went to in August. An event that made my heart swell and sing as well. Blissful, I would call it. As part of the event we were each given a pair of boots and a pair to give to one of our readers. Yep, you get to be part of my epic dream of being a sure shot on the lonesome prairies or rugged bad lands.

Looking Back - BLOGtober Fest Day 4

If you have been following along you can see that I am participating in the Arkansas Women Bloggers BLOGtober Fest to help focus and challenge myself to write more consistently on my blog. I get busy and don't prioritize what I am doing. We all get busy. In fact, it is the number one thing that women say to me, "I'm so busy." If I ask how they are, what they are doing or if they have time to do something else they each complain that they are busy.

Choose Your Weapon - BLOGtober Fest Day 3

Now that his grandmother passed away and our daughter is in her twenties we have a NEW tradition for fall - Choose Your Weapon. Yep, this peace loving, non weapon owning, quiet family on a hill takes to the field and does battle with balloons and cans. It is quite possibly the funniest moment of the year and makes the idea of making a huge Thanksgiving meal that is eaten in less then 15 minutes worthwhile.

How it works:

My husband ties balloons filled with powder (this year water, I think) to various trees, bushes, and fences throughout the property. He then lays out our assortment of weapons: a Daisy BB Gun, traditional bow and arrows, and a slingshot. Each round we choose one weapon and try to hit the targets. After the round we have to rotate weapons. What happens mostly is that we laugh and laugh.

The best part? When I post the photo to Facebook and friends who know us wonder aloud at what the heck is going on... we look pretty bad ass.

Halloween Memories - BLOGtober Fest Day 2

When I worked at Carlson Marketing Group we would dress up for Halloween and one year I was a fairy godmother. Trust me, finding that prom dress that would fit my frame was not easy. If I could find that I could make any old wish come true. 

I have been many things for Halloween, but my favorite costume, by far, was the year I dressed up as a Roller Derby girl as an adult. We were giving out candy with friends on the porch of the local paper in my small town. We did that for a couple of years until we got burned out by the older kids/adults who were obviously a little smashed and not really looking for candy. Anyway, I digress. I had on roller skates, a helmet, pads, leggings and - the best part - underpants that said Spooky across the butt over the pants. 

I was going about my evening handing out candy to good little goblins and their families, rolling around the porch.

Well, months later, I was introduced to the building inspector and I said that we hadn't met before. But he quickly said, "oh, I know you! You were the Roller Derby girl last year for Halloween. I remember your... um... costume." That's right, my butt, he remembered my spooky butt! Oh well, at least I made an impression so many months ago!

Halloween for grownups is a VERY different thing than dressing up the kiddo's. Heck, this year I was coveting a slinky Scrabble costume or, of course either Big Bird or a Woman in a Binder! We shall see!

Simple Fall Fashion - BLOGtober Fest Day 1

I am no fashionista, in fact, my mom used to say that I dressed like a bag lady. She was ALL about fashion and accessories and I was comfortable in jeans and a plaid shirt. Granted, I was a teen in the 80's and that was the required uniform. I haven't exactly grown much from that, my go to is always jeans and I adore simplicty in clothing. Fall, though, allows for a little more layering and bringing that simplicy to what I think is another level.

Playing around in Polyvore I danced around the Fossil bag and the Old Gringo boots, my real love. The rest of it is just about about comfort and feeling the luxurious fall colors - colors I do love. But the BOOTS! Don't you love the boots?

Goodbye Zooey and Mindy

Shut up. Just shut up! Your whining, complaining, yelling selves have caused me to decide to give you both up. That's right. I am dropping my two favorite girls just like I dropped Lauren Graham in Parenthood. I do not need to watch contrived arguments on TV. If I wanted made up drama I could yell at my husband about some trivial matter and make up all on my own. In fact, it might be more fun and have longer lasting benefits.

Seriously, who thinks good TV is comprised of young women, who are extremely funny on their own, diving into stupid arguments about nothing with people who are supposed to be their friends, family or potential sleeping partners? That isn't good TV, that is the annoying neighbor at a table at the local cafe that you want to move away from or the girl in high school who picked fights with her boyfriend everyday to feel like he liked her more. Terrible lunch and flawed logic.

Sure, I was into the New Girl last season because I liked the quirky smart character that Zooey Deschanel had brought to life, she was making geeky cool. Unfortunately, this season they decided that arguing with her room mate would make great television. Oh, and the fact that she feels compelled to have mindless sex - not that I care about mindless sex, but that isn't the character she built. I digress though, it is the constant arguing that makes my husband slink out of the room and me to cringe. It isn't fun to watch friends fight so why would I want to do that by watching actors do it?

I was willing to watch The Mindy Project because I like Mindy Kaling from the Office and I enjoyed her biography, but she is taking her obscene love of 80's romantic comedies to life, but without the charm of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Instead, she has decided that arguing with a co-worker who is, of course, a potential love interest later is how we should enjoy watching her life come to the small screen. No thanks. Again, cringe worthy.

So, I just got by Tuesday nights back to do something else. Thanks, ladies and good luck with that arguing.
