My Sparkly Girl came home in a huff yesterday because she had been debating with her ex-boyfriend about vacations. She ascertained that they were a privilege and that many (she suspects most) can't afford a vacation. He believed that everyone can go on vacation they just choose not to. Then the teacher piped in that people choose to be safe and stay at home and don't go on vacation.
She was thinking about migrant workers, the working poor, people in Sudan, us, and the other millions of folks who live check to check. They could go on vacation, but they either don't have the monetary resources or the life that would afford them the opportunity.
She was so mad at the idea of two white men telling her that people just choose not to go on vacation. I am afraid that she is setting up to be a bit of a rich white person hater...
What do you think? Can everyone go on vacation? How would you respond to her teacher and classmate?
