It all started with 100 mini cupcakes being frosted and sprinkled until our feet hurt from standing in the kitchen. My Sparkly Girl wanted to give Mr Pot the best 16th birthday in the whole world. She was so excited. So, cupcakes done, flowers ordered for delivery during lunch, and an afternoon of driving planned.
I hadn't thought too much about how I would feel about her driving with him. I knew it was inevitable that she would drive with a teenage (totally inexperienced) driver at some point, but a huge feeling of loss accompanied it. Yes, I won't have to drive them all over the planet. Yes, I will save wear and tear on my car. Yes, I will save money on gas. But even with all of those added benefits I will miss them. I adore their company and their time and it is a huge passage to let them go. And I guess that is the greatest gift a 16 year old can get. Freedom.
